Our board is growing as we fill positions that have been open for a while. It’s very exciting to get in new people and new ideas. We welcome Trina Wilson as Vice President, Susan Jackson as Volunteer Coordinator (you’ll be hearing from Susan!), Kelley Rowley as Social Media Coordinator, and Margaret Leary as Bach to Books Chairperson.Kelley has already been updating Facebook, so check it out by doing a search for “Friends of the Allen Public Library” while in your Facebook account. Thanks to Sandy Wittsche, we have a new display in our case at the library – on your next trip, check out our tote bags and backpacks that are for sale at the Circulation Desk.We also have Chocolate Cookbooks for sale, hundreds of yummy chocolate recipes, all for just $10.
We still have two open positions that we would love to fill: Community Relations and On-Going Book Sale. The Community Relations person helps organize the Christmas Parade entry and the Recycle-a-Book Day and works with various community groups to promote the Friends. As you know, the On-Going Book Sale is our big fundraiser. The person in charge of this works with library staff and volunteers to sort and organize books, keep displays filled, and would need to come up with some ideas to get more book donations. We’d like to fill both of those positions before the end of summer, so if you think you would be interested, please contact me at allentxfriends@gmail.com.
There are many fun activities at the library this summer. From the ever-popular Children’s Summer Reading Program to the fairly new Adult Summer Reading Program, from the last survivor of the Tuskegee Airmen to the E-Flat Porch Band, from Armchair Traveling to museum movies, from David Chicken to the all-new “beTween” programs (ages 8 – 11), there’s bound to be something for everyone in your family.
If you have comments, questions, or ideas, please let us know. This is your organization and we would like to hear from you. Please watch an upcoming newsletter for a survey that will help us to know what you are interested in seeing the Friends do, which projects you support and ideas you have for future programs.Right now, our number one need is books for the book sale! Clean out your closets, clean out your kids’ bookshelves, bring us books and buy some from us to replace the ones you’ve donated. You help the library and it’s a fun and inexpensive way to buy books for yourself (and your children).
I hope you are having a lovely summer. Sherry Grimes President, Friends of the Library allentxfriends@gmail.com
