ALLEN READS 2011-2012 BROCHURE (PDF)
ALLen Reads is a one-book program under the leadership of the Friends of the Allen Public Library.  It is unique in one-book programs in that related books are chosen as “companions” to the main book to promote families and all generations reading and talking together.

The goals set for ALLen Reads are to:
  • stimulate interest in the pleasure and importance of reading
  • engage the residents of our community as we come together - in schools, families, book groups, civic organizations and more - to discuss the book and the issues it raises
  • encourage reading at all ages
  • include everyone, especially those new to the country or community
  • bring the community together through shared activities and experiences

RECOMMENDED FOR THE GRADES SECONDARY & ADULT LEVEL
The Hound of the Baskervilles
is the third of four crime novels by Sir Arthur Conan
Doyle featuring the detective Sherlock Holmes. Originally serialized in The Strand Magazine from August 1901 to April 1902, it is set largely on Dartmoor in Devon in England's West Country and tells the story of an attempted murder inspired by the legend of a fearsome, diabolical hound.

RECOMMENDED FOR THE GRADES 4 - 6
Sammy Keyes
is a series of mystery novels written by Wendelin Van Draanen for children aged 9–15. The series focuses on Sammy's adventures as an amateur sleuth. The books, which are narrated in the first-person perspective by Sammy, involve detective fiction as well as comedy. Sammy begins her adventures in the first book as a seventh- grader, and the series will end when she completes the eighth grade.Allen Public Library | February 25, 2012

RECOMMENDED FOR THE YOUNGEST READERS
A postcard from Florida with a mysterious one-word message--OINK!--is the only clue to the whereabouts of the pigs that ran away from Bert and Ethel in The Great Pig Escape.
Acting on this slim lead, Bert frantically searches the crowded streets and muddy swamps of theSunshine State, never noticing the hilariously dressed porkers hiding in plain sight.

Are there pigs under those beach umbrellas, or rocking and rolling to the tunes of the Squealers?
Come along with Bert on his great pig search and discover who's hamming it up under the sun.
