ALLen Reads is a one-book program under the leadership of the Friends of the Allen Public Library. It is unique in one-book programs in that related books are chosen as “companions” to the main book to promote families and all generations reading and talking together.
The goals set for ALLen Reads are to:
stimulate interest in the pleasure and importance of reading
encourage reading at all ages
include everyone, especially those new to the country or community
bring the community together through shared activities and experiences
engage the residents of our community as we come together - in schools, families, book groups, civic organizations and more - to discuss the book and the issues it raises
For 2007-08 the chosen book was Marley & Me (adult level), along with Marley: A Dog Like No Other (young adult) and Bad Dog, Marley! (picture book). Over 12,000 people in Allen participated in reading and related activities.
Bad Dog Tales Unleashed can be purchased as a paper back book for $9.95 plus Shipping or read as a free download at www.lulu.com. Just log on, search for it by title and it pops right up!
The 2008-09 program book is Seedfolks. “Companion books” include The Gardener (junior level) and Wanda’s Roses (early childhood/elementary). Watch for more information as this year’s plans take shape.

The ALLen Reads committee has chosen Seedfolks, written by Paul Fleischman, as their pick for 2008-2009.
Seedfolks centers around an impromptu community garden in an impoverished neighborhood and the inhabitants who make it flourish. Last year we were very fortunate that Marley & Me was available for three reading levels. To continue this generational involvement, ALLen Reads will be choosing “companion” books: three reading levels of books with similar themes. Seedfolks’ themes include community, gardening, stewardship, and bridging ethnic boundaries, just to name a few. Companion books have yet to be chosen, and suggestions for junior level and picture books are welcome.
In appreciation for all you do to help the ALLen Reads program, the Friends are the first to know about this year’s selection. ALLen Reads is currently forming committees for the coming year, and any interested Friends may contact Jane Bennett at jane@jrbennett.net or (972) 390-1238 for information on joining a committee. |
